Wildhood Supporting the Shelter Manager: A Key Partnership for Safe Wilderness Adventures
One of Wildhood's main objectives is to monitor the condition of fixed shelters.
Wildhood aims to stand alongside the shelter manager, providing support for the monitoring and maintenance activities, which are generally carried out by volunteers who are passionate about the mountains.
Wildhood’s app lets you easily find nearby shelters through its interactive map. Just remember to enable your GPS location “while using the app”! To know the condition of the shelter where you plan to spend the night, we recommend contacting the shelter manager directly. Additionally, you can find helpful information in the comments section on the shelter’s page, where fellow users share their experiences and insights.
Why It’s Important to Comment
To make Wildhood increasingly useful and effective, a fundamental role is played by all the members of the community.
Comments on a shelter's page primarily include the publication date.
You will know the date of the last visit by a user (and you can contact them through their social profiles for more information, which you can verify on their Wildhood profile page).
However, what matters most is the content of the comment.
What information is important to include in a comment?
What condition is the shelter in? Even if the shelter is in good condition, it’s valuable information for the community!
Are there any details that can be improved or added? For example, the presence of blankets, electricity, or mobile network coverage.
Is there water along the trail? Indicate how far the water source is from the shelter and along which trail.
Of course, there are no strict rules for writing a comment, other than providing useful and valuable information for anyone visiting the shelter page next time.
Alongside the Shelter Manager
The condition of high-altitude shelters is constantly changing due to the harsh environment they are in. Additionally, they are often far from direct visual control, even by the manager.
While working on this project, we realized that it’s not always easy to find the contact details of a shelter manager.
From this perspective, commenting on a shelter page directly on the app is simpler and quicker for a community member.
At this point, Wildhood steps in, constantly monitoring all new comments on shelter pages and forwarding any reports to the shelter manager.
